39. Give a heartfelt surprise to someone

While Acts of Service was my weakness, I wanted to attempt a creative way to tell my partner that I loved him. While on a trip to Quebec in May, I devised an intimate surprise birthday party. I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to go about the surprise because there was never a time where we were apart during the trip. I had packed some party supplies and candles in my duffle bag along with some tape and scissors. I also wrapped his gift and left it in his trunk, lying that it’s for my parents. As there was no way for me to break free on my own and set up a surprise area in a restaurant, I decided to change my original plan and devise a new master plan. I was going to put him to sleep early, set up the Airbnb living room with the party decorations and surprise him. Earlier that day, we searched Old Quebec for some cake shops and we didn’t find any. I was so upset, but I finally found a small bakery that sold small pieces of cakes. I got a couple, stating that I wanted to eat it the next day too. My job throughout the day was to completely exhaust him, so he would fall asleep early. That was the trickiest part of the surprise, because I needed an hour or so to quietly decorate the room. But to my surprise, that was actually the easiest part! It was only like 9 pm, and he fell asleep, snoring so loudly that it relieved me to decorate freely and take my time. After decorating and setting up everything including the cakes and candles, I called his phone, waking him to come to the living room. Eyes still swollen and wobbling into the living room in his boxers, he was really surprised! He didn’t see it coming because his birthday was some days away and he had no idea I had brought all these party supplies. “Where did these all come from?” was one of his responses. Although every birthday can’t be a surprise, his first birthday surprise was a huge success and not only did I enjoy my time preparing and seeing his reaction, but my partner also was able to have a memorable birthday.
